New York; Museum of Modern Art MoMA:”Alibis: Sigmar Polke 1963-2010″

My week visit in New York City, highlights the exhibition at MoMa of Sigmar Polke (1941-2010)

This retrospective is the first to encompass the unusually broad range of mediums he worked with during his five-decade career, including painting, photography, film, sculpture,drawing, printmaking, television, performance, and stained glass, as well as his constant, highly innovative blurring of the boundaries between these mediums.

Four gallery spaces on MoMA’s second floor are dedicated to the exhibition, which comprises more than 250 works and constitutes one of the largest exhibitions ever organized at the Museum.

Munich ;Pinakothek der Moderne:”People in a River Landscape” August Sander and the Photography of the Present from the Lothar Schirmer Collection

An amazing evening.. Schirmer Mosel publications celebrated its 40th anniversary with an opening of Lothar Schirmer photographic Collection with about 40 works from August Sander’s epochal cycle “People of the 20th century”

The celebration continued with a reception at the Vorhoelzer Forum of the Technical University with fine food and a surprising performing appearance of legendary Hannah Schygulla. Amazing evening. Congratulations Schirmer Moser Publications and Lothar Schirmer for the great exhibition at Pinakothek.

Sander’s photographic typology of German society did not only fascinate artists, writers and philosophers of that period but, at the same time, formed an important point of reference for the artistic concept contemporary photographers had of themselves. This is also reflected in the Munich publisher Lothar Schirmer’s photographic collection, the starting point of which was a group of some 80 works by Sander comprising not only portraits, but also landscapes and urban pictures, acquired in the early 1970s. Sander’s photographs from this collection will be exhibited for the first time in their entirety and be displayed in dialogue with works by contemporary artists such as Bernd and Hilla Becher, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth and Jeff Wall. The selection will be extended by a rare group of extraordinary photographs taken in Berlin by Heinrich Zille in the late 19th /early 20th century and enlarged by Thomas Struth almost 100 years later. “The exhibition PLAYTIME takes up the subtle critique aimed at the modern working environment by Jacques Tati in his eponymous film, and raises a variety of questions: How do artists from different generations and backgrounds engage with the subject of work? What does it mean to work as an artist today? And how is the artist’s work different from other forms of work? The artists we have invited contribute a wide range of perspectives and methods. They not only address work as such, but also the norms and behavioral precepts of a society defined by work. They examine existing power relations and gender-specific conventions in the working world and interrogate the connections between identity, the situations in which we live and work. 1960s socio-critical and activist positions enter into dialogue with more recent pieces that reflect on the conditions under which we work today.” (Lenbachaus press release)

Munich; Haus der Kunst; opening Ellen Gallagher “AxME”

A most amazing exhibition opened at Haus der Kunst of Ellen Gallagher organized by Tate Modern in association with Sara Hilden Art Museum Tampere and Haus der Kunst, Munich.

A lovely dialogue conversation with the artist and Dr Ulrich Wilmes.

…..Ellen Gallagher took the New York art world by storm in the early 1990s with a series of beautifully balanced, deceptively minimalist paintings such as “Oh! Susanna” (1993), “Oogaboogah”, and “Pinocchio Theory” (both 1994). In a series of work she used advertisements for wigs and other commodities as well as feature articles from black-oriented magazines like Ebony, Our World, Black Stars, etc. One of her most intriguing works consists of a grid of twenty female wig models of various skin shades set against a vast white background. The wigs are meticulously cut into elaborate shapes and float on paper as if embossed.(HdK press release)

In the catalogue essay on the exhibition “Ellen Gallagher – AxME”, Ulrich Wilmes writes about the cornerstones of the artist’s visual language. The “yellow paintings”, made between 2001 and 2004, illustrate her source of inspiration, which also influenced other works.

For the historic hall of the Hamburger Bahnhof, Susan Philipsz has designed a sound installation that relates both to the building’s former function as a railway station and to the architectonic structure of the hall with its 12archways. The artist connects the former railway station – a place of departure and arrival, of parting and return – with the eventful life of the composer Hanns Eisler (1898-1962), who lived in Berlin in the 1020s and 1950s.

The artist has created three pieces, based on three different musical compositions for film by Eisler, that play one after the other, each tone of the compositions wa recorded separately in the studio. In the installation, the tones are distributed among the 24 loudspeakers installed along the entire length of the historic hall. Each loudspeaker is assigned a tone on he chromatic scale, so that each of the instrumental voices becomes spatialized and wanders through the hall.

Munich; Pinakothek Der Moderne; at the Ernst von Siemens auditorium the film “Old Joy” by Kelly Reichardt

Today, this morning at Pinakothek Der Moderne, part of a series of films screened as of Jeff Wall exhibition. at the Ernst von Siemens Auditorium I saw ” Old Joy”, 2005 written and directed by Kelly Reichardt; with Will Oldham, Daniel London; the film features a fantastic soundtrack by Yo La Tengo.

The most amazing is that films that somehow have gotten out of my attention living in New York, thanks to amazing things at the Munich museums I can catch up on my film literature..

The story of two old friends, who reunite for a weekend camping trip in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains. OLD JOY is the critically-acclaimed film The New York Times calls, “A MUST SEE!”

“Main aim of the museum’s exhibition policy since the beginning has been to bring out the most vibrant, progressive and innovative domestic artistic forces, while enabling the opportunity for artists to create new works of art. Afresh exhibition explores our future in an international environment, presents the new questions posed, showcases these emerging artists as they gain momentum.

A systematic and thorough research that lasted about two years has proceeded. Starting point was EMST’s open invitation to the artistic community in an attempt to map the new generation that resulted in the collection of over 1000 portfolios of Greek Artists.

Born in the 80s (from 1979 to 1990) these 34 new artists and the members of 3 artistic groups have just completed their studies and started to make their first steps in Greece but also in international art centers such as London, Berlin, Vienna, Cologne, Amsterdam, Manchester.”

More than 60 works are on displayed (installations, drawings, video, performance, sound installations, paintings), out of which 27 are works made especially for this exhibition…….

Representatives of a generation shaped by (and from) the intangible digital technology, they are brought up with the new consciousness of co-creation, collaboration, diffusion of knowledge and information. They create collective and participatory communities; explore contemporary issues related to the new economy and production processes, labor, sustainability, autonomy and alternative ways of living.

a beautiful exhibition on Thursday morning touring the Cycladic museum

The exhibition “Figures’ loved and idealised …Illustrating poems by C.P.Cavafy” focuses on figures that play a leading role in Cavafy’s poetry. Inspired by the verse “Voices, loved and idealized” from Cavafy’s poem Voices, the exhibition uses archaeological artefacts to illustrate a selection of poems with mythological and, especially, historical subjects, which experts believe comprise approximately one third of Cavafy’s work.

The exhibition is curated by Prof. Nicholas Chr. Stampolidis, Maria D.Tolis, Mimika Giannopoulou

Archaic is the period throughout the 7th century BC, until the end of the Persian Wars (480/79 BC). This period is characterized by the development of the city-state and the transition from aristocracy to tyranny and, eventually, democracy. It is also characterized by great achievements in the economy, art and intellectual life….

in the south side of the gallery, the depictions of the young women (Korai) is my favorite corner.

Athens; Benaki museum; opening of exhibition by Andro Wekua “pink wave hunter” (collaboration with Deste Foundation)

ANDRO WEKUA <br/><em>PINK WAVE HUNTER</em>

A new program of collaboration between the Benaki Museum and the DESTE Foundation, opens with an exhibition of Andro Wekua.

This exhibition features a series of sculptural models of buildings drawn from memories of Wekua’s childhood in Sukhumi, Georgia. Wekua was born in the popular seaside town of Sukhumi, where he lived until his family was forced to flee during the Abkhazian conflict of the 1990’s. The town was subsequently devastated by civil war, leaving the artist and his family part of the Georgian diaspora unable to return to home. Drawing on this experience, Wekua conjures images of his childhood town from memory and, supplemented by online research, creates sculptural representations of the city’s buildings. (press release )
