Ulm; day visit with the Freunde of HdK; the Kunsthalle Weishaupt, Neu-Ulmer Kunst GmbH and The Walther Collection

A day trip to the city of Ulm with the Freunde of HdK, starting early morning from Munich. Thanks to our wonderful managing director, Ms Elke Bernhart  for a beautiful and so well organized day.

First stop the Kunsthalle Weisphaupt, given a tour of the collection by Siegfried Weishaupt.

“I collect intuitively,” is one of Siegfried Weishaupt`s understatements describing his talent for discovering works of art. This passion has occupied the industrialist from Schwendi, near Ulm, and his wife Jutta for more than four decades. The result is an outstanding ensemble of exquisite works by famous artists, which cannot be explained by intuition only….over the  years, the collector and his wife Jutta have expanded their focus from the geometric “Concrete” art to other art movements: First to the Abstract Expressionism of US artists as Mark Rothko for instance, or to the work of Robert Rauschenberg giving a new impetus, then to Pop Art and contemporary art movements.

“Along with Tony Cragg (b 1949) and Antony Gormley (b 1950), Richard Deacon is one of the most important contemporary British sculptors. His existential study of form and space reveals a fundamentally new approach, the determining factor being his treatment of the most diverse materials. The wavy, convoluted sculptures with their intricate rhythms and the biomorphic spatial objects are amongst the most complex works of modern sculpture.”….

“…In 1999, Richard Deacon began working with ceramics in a Cologne workshop. In Salzburg we are showing four enigmatic biomorphic sculptures of this material, multicoloured and with a gorgeous glaze.”

at the opening of the exhibition today was  presented for the first time the book Richard Deacon: So, And, If, But, ed. Dieter Schwarz (Winterthur Museum of Art), an anthology of essays on art theory by Richard Deacon, written during the years 1970-2012.

The film In Between – der Künstler Richard Deacon (Germany, 2012) by Claudia Schmid also at the exhibition.

The exhibition takes this drama as its starting point to identify how heightened forms of affect are mediated in society today; from public exposure of emotionality in need of an audience to a consequential role technology plays in facilitating intimate relationships with its users”

Salzburg_ at Villa Kanst; Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac: Robert Mapplethorpe, curated by Isabelle Huppert

August 31, 2013-January 11, 2014

photo: courtesy of Ropac  gallery

A lovely visit at Ropac gallery-Villa Kanst and private tour of the exhibition by the director of the gallery,  Dr Arne Ehmann

“….. The gallery has invited French actress Isabelle Huppert to curate the exhibition. This is the latest in a series of exhibitions devoted to Robert Mapplethorpe that have been curated by artists such as Cindy Sherman, David Hockney, theatre director Bob Wilson and, in 2011, film director Sofia Coppola. The idea is to offer the public a different and more personal take on his work…..

...Naturally affected by beauty, Isabelle Huppert’s selection of these often unexplored images creates a poetic atmosphere of mysterious softness.

As Isabelle Huppert herself admitted, “I look at each Robert Mapplethorpe photo as if I were reading a poem. In the ones I have chosen, his way of seeing the world is pent with softness – and silence. They are silent photos. In that particular world that he made his own, everything is connected. He blurred the frontiers, merged the mobile and the immobile. His flowers are alive, almost human, and his bodies are frozen in their eternal beauty. Each photo is pure emotion. In each one of them there is a perfection of form, the delicacy and mystery of light and shade. Robert Mapplethorpe, the photographer poet.” (gallery press release)
